WHY IS THE COURSE IMPORTANT?

The escalating scarcity of freshwater coupled with the growing volume of wastewater and biosolids presents a critical challenge worldwide. A circular approach to managing these resources is no longer a luxury but a necessity. By treating used water and biosolids as valuable resources rather than waste, we can significantly reduce our dependence on fresh water, mitigate environmental impacts, and create new economic opportunities. Circularity in this context involves recovering energy, nutrients, and water from wastewater and biosolids for reuse, thereby closing the loop. This not only conserves precious freshwater but also generates revenue through the sale of recovered resources.

Given its importance, the Government of India’s flagship programs such as Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM -2.0) and AMRUT 2.0 emphasize achieving ‘water secure’ urban regions, supported at both Central and State levels with crucial policies. Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) responsible for used water infrastructure and services in Indian cities are expected to align with SDG 6.3 and improve the water quality by reducing pollution and increasing wastewater recycling and safe reuse by 2030.

ASCI’s training program on “Circularity in Used Water and Biosolids Management” is poised to play a pivotal role in fostering this paradigm shift. The Course is aimed to impart advanced knowledge and practical skills among the water and sanitation professionals and policymakers focussing on the areas of wastewater treatment, biosolids management, and resource recovery to inculcate circularity at the ULB level. The course emphasizes wastewater as a valuable resource, covering advanced treatment methods and regulatory frameworks to create resilient, environmentally friendly, sustainable and resilient future cities in India.
