Legacy of ASCI

ASCI – The College for Practising Managers

The Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI), Hyderabad, was established in 1956 at the initiative of the Government of India and the corporate sector. Conceived as the first institution in India dedicated to post-experience management education, ASCI has, for nearly seven decades, equipped corporate managers, administrators, entrepreneurs, and academicians with the skills to bridge theory and practice, preparing them to address the ever-evolving complexities of governance, business, and development.

From its inception, ASCI was envisioned as an institution of excellence and national importance – a self-supporting, autonomous, public-purpose body with the twin objectives of serving as a think tank for policy inputs and as a capacity-building hub for practising professionals.

A Legacy of Visionary Leadership

At the heart of ASCI's governance is the Court of Governors (CoG) – a body that has consistently brought together some of the finest minds from industry, public life, and academia. Over the decades, the CoG has been led by distinguished national leaders, including:

  • Mr. John Mathai – Former Union Finance Minister
  • Mr. C.D. Deshmukh – Former RBI Governor and Union Finance Minister
  • Mr. Dharma Vira – Former Cabinet Secretary to the Government of India
  • Mr. M. Narasimham – Former RBI Governor, Finance Secretary, and Executive Director at the World Bank and IMF
  • Dr. Abid Hussain – Former Member of the Planning Commission and Ambassador to the USA

The current Chairman, Sri K. Padmanabhaiah, IAS (Retd.), former Union Home Secretary, continues this legacy of leadership. ASCI is presently led by Dr. Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar, IAS (Retd.), an accomplished administrator who has served as Andhra Pradesh's first State Election Commissioner, Principal Secretary (Finance), Special Chief Secretary to the Governor, and as an Executive Member of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams.

Nation-Building Through Knowledge and Practice

Since its founding, ASCI's work has been anchored in capacity building, applied research, and management consultancy—with public good at its core. Our initiatives integrate economic, social, cultural, technological, and regulatory perspectives, enabling governments, public institutions, and industries to craft policies, design strategies, and implement reforms that drive growth and development.

  • Policy & Strategy: Advisory inputs to central and state governments, industries, and global development partners.
  • Capacity Building: Training leaders and professionals across sectors, in India and abroad.
  • Research & Consultancy: Applied research and actionable advice to address pressing developmental and managerial challenges.

Capacity Building & Leadership Development
