Description:

As the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic continues to spread and its impacts upon human health and the economy intensifies day-after-day, medical waste management is one of the clear highlights that governments and healthcare fraternity in cities are trying to tackle in addition to regular solid waste. This assumes significance as the number of cases tested continues to rise, and COVID-19 locations shift from hospitals to isolation units, handling higher quantities of biomedical waste becomes a challenge. People who may have minor symptoms, recovering at home and others who are asymptomatic might not be aware that the trash they be disposing could be contaminated.

In light of the above, The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) issued guidelines for handling, treatment and safe disposal of biomedical waste generated during treatment, diagnosis and quarantine of patients for handling, treatment and safe disposal of biomedical waste generated during treatment, diagnosis and quarantine of patients. Continued collection and scientific treatment of this waste, including of household medical waste helps ensure minimal possibility of unforeseen “knock-on” effects on human health and secondary impacts upon the environment.
