project, titled ‘‘Capacity Building Initiative in the Competition Area under Trade Development Programme in India," sponsored by the Delegation of the European Union to India, has been awarded to a consortium of which ASCI is the lead partner.
The other two partners of the consortium are: National Law School of India University Bangalore (NLSUI) and Scuola Nazionale dell’ Amministrazione (SNA), Italy. The objective of the project is to enhance the capacity of the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA) and the Competition Commission of India (CCI) in relation to competition issues. The project includes a series of activities on competition issues aimed at building capacity of the two entities and a set of multiple stakeholders including MSMEs, consumer associations, government officials, PSUs, academic institutions and think tanks, over a 50-month period. The nodal ministries for administering the project comprise the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and the Ministry of Finance, Government of India.
The activities to be taken up under the project include training programmes, workshops, advanced seminars, distinguished lecture series, research studies and research seminars. To prepare a list of activities, a series of consultations were held by the consortium with the IICA, CCI, Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Finance and the EU Delegation.
"The Project Steering Committee (PSC), which validates the overall direction and policy of the programme, has accorded approval to the work plan of the project and given a ‘go ahead’ to the project," noted the team leader of the project, Prof. Paramita Dasgupta, Centre Director and Area Chairperson at ASCI's Centre for Economics and Finance. Accompanied by her team member, Ms Ashita Allamraju, Associate Professor, at ASCI, she participated in the PSC meeting chaired by Mr Dammu Ravi, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, in New Delhi on April 20, 2015.
Prof Paramita Dasgupta made a detailed presentation on the progress of the project and the work plan. Present at the meeting as the Convenor was Dr Johann Hesse, Counselor and Head of Cooperation, EU Delegation. Representatives of Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Corporate Affairs, IICA and CCI were also present.
"My presentation was followed by a detailed and useful discussion and with the formal approval accorded by the PSC, the project activities have now commenced as planned in the work plan," Prof.Paramita Dasgupta added.
