1962 - Obtained M.Sc. degree in Nuclear Physics from Andhra University.
1965 - Joined the Indian Administrative Service. Served in various capacities in the Government of Andhra Pradesh.
1971 - Deputy Secretary/Under Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum, Government of India (1971-1976). Contributed to formulation and implementation of hydrocarbons development policies in the wake of the emerging oil crisis.
1974 - Obtained Diploma in Industrial Management from the Research Institute for Management Science, Delft, And The Netherlands.
1976 - Member-secretary, Andhra Pradesh State Electricity Board (1976-1979).
1979 - Director, Committee on Power, Ministry of Power, Government of India (1979-1980). The report of the Committee was the most comprehensive study on the power sector, which provided the basis for many legislative changes that followed.
1980 - Director, Ministry of Power, Government of India (1980-1983). Contributed towards formulation of a national policy on thermal power development and implementation of power sector reforms.

1990 - Ex-Officio Director on the boards of NTPC Limited and Power Finance Corporation and a regular invitee at the meetings of the board of directors of ONGC Limited (1990-94).
1992 - Prepared a country study for the Asian & Pacific Development Centre, Kuala Lumpur, on energy planning methodology and policy issues in India.
1994 - Principal Secretary (Energy & Environment), Government of Andhra Pradesh.
1994 - Chairman of the Experts Committee set up by the Government of India to review the methodology and norms for pricing nuclear power in the country (1994-1995).
1996 - Principal Advisor (Energy), Planning Commission, Government of India (1996-1997).
1997 - Secretary, Ministry of Power, Government of India (1997-1998).
1998 - Secretary, Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance, Government of India (1998-1999). 
1999 - Secretary Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Government of India (1999-2000). In this capacity, he represented India as Alternate Governor in meetings of The World Bank, International Monetary Fund, Asian Development Bank and G-20. He was also instrumental in processing several legislative bills covering financial sector reform. He co-chaired (with Dr. Y.V. Reddy) the Standing Committee on International Financial Architecture in the Indian context.

Dr.Siripurapu Kesava Rao, Director General - Principal (2004- Present )

Dr. S. K. Rao is currently Director-General of Administrative Staff College of India, Hyderabad, a position he assumed in March 2004. Dr. Rao was educated at Andhra and Cambridge Universities. He was awarded M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Economics from Trinity College, Cambridge. He taught economics at the University of Cambridge, Cambridge, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi and the University of Papua New Guinea, Port Moresby. Dr. Rao published several papers on development issues. He has been an examiner of Ph.D. dissertations for the Andhra University, the Delhi School of Economics, Jawaharlal Nehru University and the University of Kolkata. He has also been an occasional referee for the Cambridge Journal of economics.

For about 18 years between 1978 and 2001, he worked at the Commonwealth Secretariat in London in various diplomatic capacities, first in the Economic Affairs Division, and then as Director of the Strategic Planning and Evaluation Division. He was a member of a task force charged with restructuring the Commonwealth Secretariat during 1991-93, and a Member of the Management Committee chaired by the Commonwealth Secretary General, the body responsible for running the Commonwealth Secretariat during 1993-2000.

During 1986-87, Dr Rao was Economic Adviser to the Ministry of Commerce, Government of India, New Delhi. Dr. Rao acted as a Consultant for the United Nations, represented the Commonwealth Secretariat as an Observer at the meetings of the UN General Assembly, New York, the Joint Development Committee of the IMF and the World Bank, Washington, and participated in several conferences and symposia dealing with economic and political issues at an international level.

Dr. Rao was a Member of the Andhra Pradesh Revenue Reforms Committee, which concluded its work in 2003. Dr Rao is currently a member of the Governing Bodies of: the National Institute of Public Finance, New Delhi, Centre for Economic and Social Studies, Hyderabad, National Police Academy, Hyderabad, Mahamta Gandhi Institute of Rural energy and Development, Bangalore, Andhra Mahila Sabha P.Obul Reddy Institute of Technology & Management, Hyderabad. 

Dr Rao is on the Board of Directors of SIFY, Chennai, which specializes in information technology services, and is associated with the Satyam Group of Companies. Dr Rao is currently Chairman, LEPRA Society (known as Lepra India), a medical charity which is devoted to combating leprosy, TB, HIV/AIDS and blindness in Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and other states of India. Dr Rao is a Member of the Hyderabad Management Association, and of the Board of School of Sciences, University of Hyderabad. He is invited by the UN to be a Member of the UN Committee of Experts on Public Administration, with effect from Jan 2006.
